Why Man Utd let Onana leave on loan – Amorim

Manchester United boss, Ruben Amorim, has shed light on why the club decided to send goalkeeper André Onana out on loan.

Onana, who joined United in the summer of 2023, struggled to cement his place as first-choice shot-stopper.

Over 102 appearances, the Cameroonian conceded 150 goals, and this season he lost his spot to Altay Bayindir from the very first Premier League game.

His only outing came in the League Cup against Grimsby Town, where his display drew heavy criticism as the Red Devils suffered a shock exit.

Following the arrival of Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens, Onana sealed a loan switch to Turkish side Trabzonspor last Thursday.

Addressing the media on Friday ahead of United’s weekend league clash, Amorim explained that the move away from Old Trafford was inevitable.

“It’s not just us as a club, but also André, I think we all realized a change was needed,” Amorim said. “Sometimes it’s hard to explain exactly why. There’s performance, timing, and a bit of bad luck in certain situations. It’s been tough for him, and for us as well.”

“Our decision was to make a change at the goalkeeper position, but I wish André Onana nothing but the best.”

The Portuguese coach further highlighted that both parties agreed the separation was in everyone’s best interest.

“He worked hard and tried to help his teammates, but sometimes, even with all the quality in the world, you just need a change of scenery to get back to your best. That’s how we felt, and André felt it too.”
