South Africa to hold Heritage Day culture celebration in Lagos

The South African Consulate, in collaboration with AfroFlavour, a dynamic pan-African organisation committed to promoting African cuisine globally, is set to host the 2025 South African Heritage Day in Lagos.

At a press briefing ahead of the event, organisers revealed that the cuisine-culture celebration, scheduled for Saturday, September 20, at the Federal Palace Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos, will foster cultural exchange, understanding, and cooperation between South Africa, Nigeria, and four other participating countries: Kenya, Ghana, Morocco, and Zimbabwe.

Co-founder and CEO of AfroFlavour, Lucky Idike Jr, shared insights into the collaboration with the South African Consulate General, saying this year’s inaugural edition promises an exciting showcase of South African and Nigerian culture, traditions, and values.

“What began as a dream to spotlight African cuisine has grown into a global mission to position African food as a catalyst for trade, culture, and economic growth. We are proud to be part of that movement,” he said.

The Chargé d’Affaires at the Consulate General Lagos, Ms. Sebo Lenyai, emphasised the historical ties between South Africa and Nigeria.

“South Africa and Nigeria have a long history of collaboration and cooperation dating back to the days of the struggle. There is more that binds us than divides us, and together we can make the African Union’s Agenda 2063 a reality. This event will showcase South African and Nigerian culture, building collaboration and cooperation between Africa’s two largest economies,” she said.

Director of Content and Strategy at AfroFlavour, Tope Sadiq, outlined some of the highlights of the day.

Guests will have the opportunity to embark on a trip to Cape Town, experiencing the cosmopolitan beauty, history, and culinary delights of the city with either the ‘Red or Blue Afroflavour Passport and Visa on arrival.’

Guests will have the chance to take memorable photos at the Shaka Zulu’s throne, a symbol of Zulu heritage and strength, while enjoying live music blending South African jazz and traditional rhythms.

Adding a fashion element, the Afroliganza Fashion procession, curated by the Lai Labode Heritage Foundation, will present South African fashion alongside Nigerian attire from Yoruba, Urhobo, Hausa, and Igbo tribes.
