Over 720,000 lives most globally to suicide annually – NOA

The National Orientation Agency has raised alarm over the global toll of suicide, revealing that more than 720,000 people die by suicide every year, leaving families and communities devastated.

Speaking in Dutse on Wednesday to mark the 2025 World Suicide Prevention Day, the Jigawa State Director of NOA, Ahmad Tijjani, stressed that stigma remains one of the greatest barriers to reducing such deaths.

“Suicide is preventable and together we can change the narrative, break harmful myths and stigma,” Tijjani said. “Therefore, let us encourage open and compassionate dialogue. We should check in on family, friends, and neighbours; sometimes a simple question can save a life.”

He explained that the day, observed annually on September 10, serves as a global reminder that suicide prevention requires collective effort, community support, and compassionate action.

According to Tijjani, combating stigma is crucial to saving lives. “Use words that heal. Your kindness and care can bring hope. World Suicide Prevention Day is not only about remembrance but about hope. Let us stand together against stigma and show that every life matters,” he added.

He further urged Nigerians to demonstrate empathy, patience, and non-judgmental listening to those struggling with suicidal thoughts, while also directing them toward professional help.

“Seek help from doctors, counsellors, or hotlines if you are struggling. Share information about where support can be accessed, because awareness saves lives,” the NOA director advised.
