The Anambra State Police Command has shut down an illegal soft drink factory in Okpoko, Ogbaru Local Government Area, where harmful beverages were being produced and sold to the public.

Operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu, carried out the raid on September 3, 2025, and arrested a 48-year-old suspect, identified as Chigozie Okafor, at the scene. Several bottles of fake juice, branded as “Iyi Obeleagu Juice,” were seized during the operation.

Confirming the development on Sunday, the command’s spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, said the products were being manufactured without approval from the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control.

“These so-called drinks are not only uncertified but also dangerous to public health,” Ikenga said. “They pose a serious risk to both adults and children who unknowingly consume them.”

He added that the Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, has ordered a comprehensive investigation to identify other collaborators involved in the illicit trade.

According to him, the CP also issued a stern warning to others engaged in similar activities.

“We are determined to protect the lives of our people. Anyone producing or distributing toxic consumables should desist immediately or be ready to face the law,” Orutugu was quoted as saying.

The police noted that the proliferation of illegal factories producing counterfeit food and beverages remains a recurring threat in the state.

In October 2024, a task force stormed Nkpor in Onitsha, where fake wines with labels such as Classic Heaven, Baron Devanis, Dutch Black, Triple MW, and Hennessy were being packaged. Seven suspects were arrested, and the facility was sealed.

Similarly, in June 2024, authorities discovered a factory in Umuoji, Idemili North, producing counterfeit drugs, including paracetamol and Flagyl. Six people were arrested during that raid.

The latest operation, police said, is part of ongoing efforts to dismantle criminal networks endangering public health in Anambra State.
