Ember months: Fire service issues safety guidelines against flooding

As Nigeria enters the “ember months,” the Federal Fire Service has warned citizens to brace for possible flooding and take precautionary steps to protect lives and property.

In a statement released on Monday through its official X handle, the agency said heavy rainfall across West Africa has increased the risk of flash floods and urged Nigerians to remain alert.

“We are at the peak of the rainy season, and the risk of flooding is real. Citizens must prioritize safety and avoid unnecessary exposure to danger,” the statement read.

The Fire Service highlighted practical safety measures to observe during flooding. These include steering clear of flood-prone areas, avoiding water-covered roads, and not attempting to cross streams where the water rises above knee level.

The agency further cautioned against boating or swimming in swollen rivers, stressing that such actions could be fatal.

Speaking on post-flood safety, the Fire Service advised residents to inspect their homes for structural damage, dry out soaked furniture and walls quickly, and seek medical attention if they feel unwell. Parents were also urged to keep children away from flooded areas.

“Our advice is simple: stay informed, stay cautious, and act responsibly. The choices you make during and after flooding could save lives,” the agency emphasized.
