Canadian rising star, Victoria Mboko, was handed a reality check on Monday after suffering a straight-sets defeat in the opening round of the US Open.

The 22nd seed, who turns 19 on Tuesday, was unable to build on her recent momentum and fell 6-3, 6-2 to experienced Czech player Barbora Krejcikova.

The loss comes just weeks after Mboko celebrated a career breakthrough by clinching her maiden WTA title at the Canadian Open in Montreal.

Krejcikova, a two-time Grand Slam singles champion, will now face Japan’s Moyuka Uchijima in the second round.

Meanwhile, veteran Czech star Petra Kvitova officially bid farewell to professional tennis.

The two-time Wimbledon winner, 35, had already announced this US Open would be her final tournament, and her storied career ended with a 6-1, 6-0 defeat to France’s Diane Parry.
