Seventeen-year-old Abdul Jabar Adama has etched his name into Nigerian sporting history as the country’s first-ever medalist at the World Aquatics Junior Swimming Championships.
Competing in the men’s 50m butterfly final in Romania, Adama stormed to a silver medal with a blistering 23.64s, just behind Great Britain’s Dean Fearn, who touched first in 23.54s.
But Adama’s achievement didn’t stop at the podium finish, he shattered his own Nigerian record twice in one day.
Entering the meet with 23.81s, he lowered it to 23.61s in the prelims and then smashed it again with 23.48s in the semis before sealing his historic medal.
This feat not only delivered Nigeria’s first global honor in swimming but also signaled the rise of a world-class talent.
With Paris 2024 likely too soon, eyes are already on Los Angeles 2028, where Adama could become Nigeria’s first Olympic medalist in swimming.
