Athletic Club edged Sevilla 3-2 in a pulsating La Liga clash at San Mamés, with Nico Williams delivering a standout performance before hobbling off late on.
The 21-year-old winger opened the scoring from the penalty spot and later created the decisive goal, underlining his growing influence despite Sevilla’s spirited fightback.
Athletic struck first when Williams won and converted a penalty after being tripped by Juanlu Sánchez.
He continued to torment the visitors’ defence, carving out the second goal with a darting run and cut-back that eventually fell to Maroan Sannadi, who finished smartly before half-time.
Sevilla responded strongly after the restart. Dodi Lukébakio halved the deficit with a crisp long-range strike, and Lucien Agoumé soon levelled matters with another thunderous effort from distance.
With momentum on their side, Sevilla nearly turned the game around, as Akor Adams and Chidera Ejuke both spurned golden chances.
But just when the Andalusians looked the more likely winners, Williams once again made the difference. Driving down the flank, he squared for Robert Navarro, whose composed finish into the top corner restored Athletic’s lead.
The closing stages were frantic, with Yuri Berchiche and Williams both forced off injured and Sevilla substitute Isaac Romero seeing a stoppage-time strike blocked.
Despite late pressure, Athletic held firm to seal a thrilling victory in front of their home crowd.
