Man City squad overcrowded, exits looms, say Guardiola

Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola, has admitted that the size of his squad is becoming “unhealthy” for morale and hinted that a number of players could leave before September.

City currently boast 30 senior professionals, but at least six players are expected to move on in the coming weeks.

Guardiola, whose side cruised to a 4-0 victory over Wolves with Erling Haaland scoring twice, expressed concerns over maintaining harmony among such a large group.

“We have too many people,” Guardiola told the Daily Mail. “It’s not just about today; we didn’t have Rodri, Phil Foden, Mateo Kovacic, Savinho, or Josko Gvardiol available. On the bench, we had Nathan Ake and Ilkay Gundogan.

“I like having a deep squad to compete on all fronts, but I don’t want to leave players at home. It’s not healthy. You cannot create a good vibe or atmosphere to compete. The club has known this since last season, but that’s the situation.”

Several players are already attracting interest. Ederson, who was left out at Molineux, is reportedly a target for Galatasaray, while Tottenham are eyeing Brazilian winger Savinho.

City are reportedly exploring replacements for both.

Nottingham Forest are keen on Rico Lewis and have already secured James McAtee in a £30million deal. Kalvin Phillips and Claudio Echeverri are also expected to depart before the transfer window closes, with Guardiola suggesting that other high-profile players may follow.

“In the next two weeks, discussions with players and agents will happen to find solutions,” he added, signaling a busy period ahead for Manchester City.
