Ipswich Town to sign Akpom from Ajax on loan

Ipswich Town have struck a deal in principle to sign Ajax striker, Chuba Akpom, on loan, with a mandatory £7 million purchase clause activated if they secure Premier League promotion, according to Sky Sports.

The 29-year-old was initially lined up for a medical at Birmingham City on Monday, but the Tractor Boys swooped in to hijack the move at the last minute.

Former club Middlesbrough also made a late attempt to bring the forward back to Teesside.

Akpom’s time at Ajax has been turbulent, with reports claiming he was frozen out of first-team training earlier this summer.

He spent the latter half of last season on loan at French outfit Lille, where he scored three times and provided one assist in 14 Ligue 1 outings. Despite flashes of form, Lille opted not to trigger the purchase clause.

A product of Arsenal’s academy, Akpom made 12 senior appearances for the Gunners before embarking on a journeyman career.

His standout period came at Middlesbrough, where he netted 34 goals in 82 appearances and claimed the Championship Golden Boot in the 2022/23 season.

Born in London to Nigerian parents, Akpom is now poised for a fresh start in East Anglia as Ipswich eye top-flight promotion.
