The Federal Road Safety Corps in Ondo State says it apprehended over 15,000 road traffic violators between January and July 2025.
This was disclosed by the Ondo Sector Commander of the Corps, Samuel Ibitoye, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Sunday in Akure.
According to Ibitoye, the command booked a total of 15,145 offenders for committing 15,536 various road traffic offences within the seven-month period.
He noted that common infractions included failure to use seat belts, riding motorcycles without helmets, improper use of number plates, overloading, excessive speeding, and the use of mobile phones while driving.
“Our personnel are on patrol from Monday through Sunday to enforce traffic laws and ensure the safety of road users,” Ibitoye stated.
He emphasized that the role of the FRSC goes beyond enforcement, highlighting their continuous efforts in public sensitization and advisory campaigns.
“We don’t go out only to arrest people; a major part of our job is safety education. We are committed to advocacy and attitudinal change among motorists,” he added.
The commander also appealed to commercial drivers who are yet to install speed limit devices on their vehicles to do so, stressing that such technology could significantly reduce accidents.
“Speed limiting devices help regulate driving speed, reduce fuel consumption, prolong the vehicle’s lifespan, and ultimately save lives,” Ibitoye explained.
He identified excessive speeding as a leading cause of fatal crashes on Nigerian roads.
“Speeding remains the major cause of road deaths and crashes in Nigeria. Every motorist must take ownership of their safety and that of others,” he warned.
“Value your life and that of others on the road. Life lost to reckless driving can never be recovered,” he said.
The FRSC boss reiterated the corps’ commitment to promoting road safety through a combination of enforcement, education, and public engagement.
