Gombe State has taken a significant step towards clean energy and rural development with the commissioning of a ₦1 billion Small Hydropower–Solar Hybrid System at the Balanga Dam in Talasse, Balanga Local Government Area.
The 620KW hybrid energy project, which blends solar and hydropower technologies, was officially inaugurated on Friday.
It is funded by the European Union, Global Environment Facility, and Nigeria’s Rural Electrification Agency, and implemented by the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya—represented by his deputy, Dr Manassah Daniel Jatau—described the initiative as a transformative milestone in the state’s energy roadmap.
“This project marks a turning point in our pursuit of inclusive and sustainable development,” Yahaya said. “It aligns with our administration’s commitment to improving lives through better access to energy, education, infrastructure, and healthcare.”
The governor emphasized that stable electricity is critical to economic progress, particularly in rural areas.
“Energy is the engine of development,” he noted. “With consistent power supply, small businesses will thrive, schools and health centres will function effectively, and the agricultural value chain will receive a much-needed boost.”
The hybrid system is part of Nigeria’s broader strategy to strengthen off-grid electrification and increase renewable energy usage while reducing carbon emissions. It aims to serve thousands of residents across Balanga and neighbouring communities
Governor Yahaya appealed to residents to take ownership of the facility, stressing the importance of community responsibility in sustaining public infrastructure.
“This project belongs to the people. It must be protected, properly maintained, and used productively. Interventions like this only become meaningful when the community embraces and sustains them,” he said.
He also expressed appreciation to development partners for their confidence in the state’s development vision.
“We are grateful for the faith our partners have placed in us. This project will uplift our people and contribute significantly to environmental sustainability,” the governor added.
Key stakeholders and dignitaries at the event included Mrs Inga Satefanowicz from the EU Delegation; Dr Abba Aliyu, Managing Director/CEO of REA; and Ambassador Philbert Abaka Johnson, UNIDO Regional Director.
Others in attendance were Gombe State Commissioners Hon. Mohammed Fawu (Water, Environment and Forest Resources) and Hon. Sanusi Ahmed Pindiga (Energy and Mineral Development); Chairman of Balanga LGA, Hon. Ibrahim Salihu Jatau; and the traditional ruler of the area, His Royal Highness, Mohammed Danjuma Muhammad, the Balah-Waja.
