OAU implements strict dress code policy, threatens rustication

Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, has released a confidential internal memo dated June 13, 2025, outlining strict disciplinary measures regarding students’ appearance and personal grooming.

The policy imposes sanctions ranging from one to two semesters of rustication for various violations of the institution’s dress code.

According to the memo, offenses warranting a one-semester suspension include wearing backless or off-shoulder outfits, bomb shorts, tattered jeans, transparent clothing, dreadlocks, visible tattoos, sagging trousers, heavy makeup, brightly colored braids, and unconventional face caps.

More severe violations attracting a two-semester rustication include “unwelcome touching, kissing, hugging of the opposite sex,” “massaging or sitting on the lap of the opposite sex,” as well as certain hairstyles like “spangled hairstyles” and “coloured hair.”
