Super Falcons head coach, Justine Madugu, has expressed satisfaction with his team’s hard-fought win over South Africa’s Banyana Banyana, stating they fully deserved the semi-final victory at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
Nigeria emerged 2-1 winners in a tense showdown on Tuesday night, edging past their long-time rivals to book a place in the tournament final.
The Super Falcons set the tone early, dominating proceedings in the first half and taking the lead through a composed finish by team captain Rasheedat Ajibade.
South Africa responded strongly in the second half, leveling the score through a penalty converted by Linda Motlhalo.
However, Nigeria had the final say, with Michelle Alozie netting a late winner to seal the win.
Reflecting on the game, Madugu acknowledged the challenge posed by the South African side.
“Yes, it was a tough game, no doubts about that. Everyone knew it wasn’t going to be an easy game,” the 61-year-old remarked post-match.
“At the end of it all, what we desired was to win, and eventually that happened, so we’re happy we’ll be playing the finals.”
Nigeria will now face Morocco in the championship clash set for Saturday.
