VIDEO: Femi Adesina reflects on ex-president Buhari’s legacy

Femi Adesina recounts Sultan of Sokoto's advice ahead of Buhari regime's end

Femi Adesina, former Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, has offered a heartfelt tribute to his late principal, highlighting Buhari’s unwavering commitment to discipline and incorruptibility.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics program, Adesina stated: “Muhammadu Buhari, the boss and my friend. During my eight years of service, I never viewed him as a boss, nor did he see me as a subordinate. We were friends.”

The former presidential spokesman painted a portrait of Buhari as a leader of exceptional character: “He was a very pleasant, decent, and straightforward man. He was a unique person. I have never seen a man more disciplined than the late Muhammadu Buhari.”

Adesina emphasized that the former president, who passed away on Sunday at 82, maintained an unblemished record throughout his public service: “He could not be linked to anything with the slightest affinity to corruption.”

The tribute comes as Nigeria mourns the former military head of state (1983-1985) and two-term civilian president (2015-2023). Adesina’s personal account provides rare insight into Buhari’s leadership style and interpersonal relationships during his presidency.

Having served as Buhari’s media adviser throughout his eight-year administration, Adesina’s testimony carries particular weight regarding the former leader’s governance approach and personal conduct. His characterization of their working relationship as a friendship rather than hierarchical underscores Buhari’s reputed humility.

The former spokesman’s comments align with Buhari’s longstanding public image as an austere, disciplined leader, though they contrast with some criticisms of his administration’s economic policies and human rights record.
