Former Fiorentina and Italian goalkeeper, Emiliano Viviano, has admitted that he harbours a strong personal dislike for Napoli manager Antonio Conte, despite recognizing his accomplishments on the pitch.
Conte, who made headlines by guiding Napoli to the Serie A title in his debut season at the helm, is often praised for his winning mentality and tactical discipline.
However, Viviano, speaking during an episode of the podcast Te ne intendi di calcio, didn’t hold back his views.
“I don’t like Conte, in the sense that every time I hear him speak, I don’t like him,” Viviano said on the show.
While acknowledging Conte’s impressive managerial résumé, the veteran shot-stopper expressed a preference for different coaching styles.
“I’m not crazy about his football either, but if I say Conte is an idiot, I’m the idiot. Conte is a great coach, a winner, someone who knows how to do things. Then again, if you talk to me, I prefer other coaches.”
Viviano also touched on how some critics elevate Conte unfairly in contrast to other managers, particularly Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri.
“And some people, to go against (Max) Allegri, make him look like the absolute idiot, and that bothers me.”
He concluded by giving Conte credit for his communication skills but reiterated his personal distaste for the coach’s playing style.
“I don’t really like what he says either, but he’s exaggerating. In terms of communication, he’s number one for me; he’s won and that’s all there is to it, but personally, if I have to watch a team play, I’d rather watch a team that isn’t coached by him.”
