The Katsina State Government has declared Monday, July 14, 2025, a public holiday to mourn the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died in London on Sunday.
This was announced in a statement by the Secretary to the State Government, Abdullahi Garba Faskari, on Sunday evening.
According to the statement, the work-free day was approved by Governor Dikko Umaru Radda to allow residents and civil servants in the state pay their respects and offer prayers for the late elder statesman, who hailed from Daura in Katsina.
“The Governor of Katsina State, His Excellency, Malam Dikko Umaru Radda, PhD, CON, has declared Monday, 14th July 2025, as a work-free day in the State,” the statement read.
“This follows the demise of Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, who died earlier this evening (13th July 2025) in London.”
Governor Radda, in the statement, described Buhari as “a great leader, a hero, a true democrat and a patriotic elder statesman whose life was dedicated to the service of Nigeria.”
He also expressed deep condolences to Buhari’s family, the people of Katsina, and the entire nation, while offering prayers for the peaceful repose of the late president’s soul.
“May Allah forgive his shortcomings, grant him eternal rest, and admit him into Aljannatul Firdaus,” Radda prayed.
Details about the burial arrangements, the statement added, will be announced subsequently.
Buhari passed away at the age of 83, having served as Nigeria’s civilian president from 2015 to 2023, and earlier as military Head of State between 1984 and 1985.
