The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission has begun announcing results from Saturday’s local government elections, with the ruling All Progressives Congress sweeping early chairmanship and councillorship contests across the state’s 20 Local Government Areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas.

The polls, conducted across 13,325 polling units, proceeded peacefully despite low voter turnout. A total of 57 chairmanship and vice-chairmanship positions and 376 councillorship seats were contested by 15 out of 19 registered political parties.

In Lagos Island LGA, APC’s Taiwo Oyekan emerged victorious with 28,385 votes, dwarfing PDP’s Ajibade Olusegun who secured 1,271 votes. The margin was even wider in Amuwo-Odofin, where APC’s Prince Lanre Sanusi polled 24,926 votes against LP’s Engr. Seyi Ipinlaye’s 1,962 votes.

Agege LGA witnessed perhaps the most lopsided result, with APC’s Tunde “Disco” Azeez amassing 31,503 votes while his closest rivals from APM and ZLP managed just 86 and 10 votes respectively.

APC’s Yaba LCDA chairmanship candidate Adebayo Adefuye described the exercise as credible after voting at his ward. “The process has been smooth,” he said while unveiling his “Yaba tuntun” (New Yaba) development agenda. Adefuye also praised the Federal Government’s enforcement of local government financial autonomy.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, in a statement titled “Thank You, Lagos For Peaceful Local Government Elections,” commended residents’ orderly conduct. “I extend my heartfelt appreciation to all Lagosians who came out today to perform their civic duty… You have shown that democracy will continue to shape leadership when people actively participate in elections,” the governor stated.

Sanwo-Olu urged calm as results continue emerging, emphasizing that “peaceful democratic participation is crucial as we look forward to the 2027 general elections.” He also applauded security agencies, media, and electoral officials for their professionalism.

With APC being the only party to contest all available seats – followed by PDP’s 45 council and 259 ward candidates, and LP’s 22 LGA and 130 ward contenders – the ruling party appears set to maintain its grip on Lagos’ grassroots governance structure as more results are expected in coming days.
