The Anambra State Police Command has reaffirmed its readiness to eradicate cultism and other criminal activities in the state.
Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ikioye Orutugu, made this declaration during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Thursday in Awka.
Orutugu described cultism as an offshoot of religion, stating, “Anything that has to do with initiation, whether church or shrine, is a cult.” He explained that cultism is often exploited for revenge, social status, or gaining an advantage over competitors.
The police chief emphasized the command’s collaboration with vigilante groups and other security agencies to tackle crime.
“We are working with them, though there are challenges because the society is dynamic,” he said. “Though crime will not stop, we will keep doing our best.”
Orutugu noted that crime in Anambra has evolved, requiring modern policing strategies. “We came in and we are handling it as it evolves. I have been prepared as a police officer, I and my team,” he said, adding that he aligns with the Inspector-General of Police’s primary policing strategy.
To enhance professionalism, the command has commenced training for vigilance operatives on fundamental human rights, public relations, and interagency cooperation.
“They are organs of the state government, and they owe it a duty to interact respectfully, professionally, and ethically with other persons and organs,” Orutugu stated. “As I speak to you now, the training has commenced. With time, we will call the media to come and interact with us on the training.”
The commissioner praised Anambra’s relative peace and the industrious nature of its residents. He stressed that education and public enlightenment are vital for the state’s and Nigeria’s progress.
