In the wake of the passing of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Dr. Akinloye Owolabi Olakulehin Ige, the Oyo State Police Command has reaffirmed its commitment to public safety and a peaceful transition process.
The revered monarch died at the age of 90 on Monday, July 7, 2025. He was celebrated not only as a royal figurehead but as an ally in the fight against crime in the state.
Describing the late Olubadan as “a pillar of peace and security,” the Commissioner of Police in Oyo State, CP Johnson Oluwole Adenola, PSC, conveyed the Command’s condolences to the Olubadan-in-Council and the people of Oyo State.
“Oba Olakulehin’s active involvement in community safety efforts made him more than just a traditional ruler; he was a partner in ensuring stability within Ibadan and the state at large,” CP Adenola said.
From a solutions journalism perspective, the police response to this moment of grief includes a comprehensive, proactive security strategy aimed at maintaining law and order while respecting cultural sensitivities.
According to a press statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Adewale Osifeso, law enforcement officers have intensified patrols, increased surveillance, and deployed personnel around sensitive areas, especially the Olubadan Palace.
“The Command has activated its intelligence-driven mechanisms, including stop-and-search operations and inter-agency convoy patrols, to prevent any form of disorder during this period of transition,” Osifeso noted.
In addition to physical policing, the Command is also focusing on civic engagement. Residents have been encouraged to go about their normal activities, while parents and community leaders have been urged to advise youths against involvement in any acts that could disrupt public peace.
“We are counting on religious and socio-political leaders to help reinforce the message of peace. This is a time for unity and reflection, not unrest,” CP Adenola emphasized.
The police also shared emergency hotlines for prompt citizen response, urging the public to report suspicious activities via the toll-free number 615 or through the Police Command Control Room lines.
