Academic activities at the University of Jos have been disrupted as the university’s branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities declared an indefinite strike on Friday, July 4, 2025.
The industrial action follows the non-payment of salaries for the month of June.
The strike decision was conveyed to lecturers in a message issued late Thursday by the UNIJOS ASUU chairman, Professor Jurbe Molwus.
“This is to request all members to abstain from lectures and statutory meetings if our salary for the month of June 2025 is not paid by 11:59 pm today, 3rd July 2025,” the statement read.
He added that the action was in accordance with a standing resolution by ASUU’s National Executive Council, which permits branches to initiate industrial action if salaries are not received by the third day of a new month.
A congress resolution passed on June 4, 2025, had earlier reaffirmed the university’s commitment to this position.
The strike officially commenced at 12:01 am on Friday, July 4. Prof. Molwus emphasized the need for strict compliance, stating: “Please ensure full compliance until you are communicated to resume work.”
He also disclosed that a strike monitoring committee has been set up to ensure members adhere to the directive.
