Nigerian military forces scored a major victory against insurgents Monday during a fierce firefight near the Cameroon border, killing 10 terrorists and recovering significant weapons in a strategic operation to secure the Lake Chad Basin region.

Defence Headquarters spokesperson Major General Markus Kangye confirmed the successful clearance operation conducted by combined troops of Operation Hadin Kai and the Multinational Joint Task Force along the Rann-Gamboru Ngala axis in northern Borno State.

“The encounter occurred during a combined operation strategically designed and executed to flush out remnants of BH/ISWAP terrorists operating within the border communities,” Kangye stated. “The troops, acting on credible intelligence, masterfully stormed the terrorists’ hideout between Rann and Gamboru, resulting in an intense gun battle where 10 terrorists met their Waterloo, as a result of the superior firepower of the gallant troops.”

The operation yielded substantial gains, with security forces discovering an arms cache that included anti-aircraft ammunition at the scene. Military sources indicate the recovered weapons are undergoing technical analysis while search operations continue for fleeing insurgents.

Kangye emphasized the broader security strategy behind the mission: “The operation was part of a broader strategy to dominate the Southern Lake Chad axis and prevent cross-border movement of BH/ISWAP terrorists.”

The Defence spokesperson reaffirmed the military’s sustained offensive posture, noting: “The Armed Forces of Nigeria, in collaboration with the MNJTF, Hybrid Forces and other security agencies have intensified operational tempo in the Lake Chad Basin and other parts of Northern Borno in order to eliminate the remnants of BH/ISWAP in the region.”

Monday’s engagement marks the latest in a series of successful operations against terrorist elements in the border region, demonstrating improved regional military cooperation. Security analysts note the recovery of anti-aircraft ammunition suggests insurgents may have been attempting to acquire more sophisticated weaponry.

The Defence Headquarters maintains that ongoing operations will continue to degrade terrorist capabilities and restore normalcy to the restive region. Civilian populations in the area have been urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious movements to security forces.
