The Anambra State Police Command has disbursed over N8 million to the families of 13 officers who died while serving in the line of duty.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Ikioye Orutugu, presented the cheques on Friday during the command’s monthly meeting held at the CP’s Conference Hall in Awka.
According to a statement released on Saturday by the state police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the gesture was made under the Inspector-General of Police Group Life Assurance and Family Welfare Scheme.
It is part of efforts by the Force leadership to support the families of fallen heroes and boost morale among serving officers.
Among the beneficiaries was the family of an Inspector who was tragically killed by a “friendly force” at a Police Observation Point along the Onitsha-Owerri Expressway near Danaks Fuel Station.
The remaining recipients were relatives of 12 other officers who lost their lives in various circumstances while on active duty.
“This initiative is a reflection of the IGP’s commitment to the welfare of our personnel and their families,” CP Orutugu said during the presentation.
“We understand the pain of loss, and while no amount can replace their loved ones, this token is meant to ease some burdens.”
He urged the families to invest the funds wisely to support the dependents left behind.
The CP also used the occasion to commend the Inspector-General of Police for sustaining the welfare initiative and reiterated the command’s resolve to maintain law and order in the state.
“Officers must continue to show dedication, knowing that their sacrifice is not forgotten. The welfare of every policeman remains a top priority,” he added.
During the meeting, CP Orutugu also reviewed security updates from Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers across the state. He announced the adoption of new strategies to enhance safety and stability in Anambra.
The session also featured briefings from stakeholders, including representatives of an insurance firm, the Police National Housing Fund, the pension unit, and Assistant Commissioner of Police Anietie Eyoh, who delivered a lecture on operational strategies.
CP Orutugu concluded by assuring residents of Anambra that the command remains committed to protecting lives and property, pledging that officers will continue to give their best in service to the state.
