The Lagos State Government has strongly refuted recent allegations made by former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, concerning the demolition of a property reportedly owned by his brother.
In a statement issued via the official X handle of the Lagos State Government, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Gbenga Omotoso, made it clear that no agency of the state was responsible for the said demolition.
“We wish to categorically state that neither the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) nor any other government department carried out the demolition Mr. Obi referred to,” Omotoso said.
Reinforcing the government’s position, Dr. Olajide Abiodun Babatunde, the Special Adviser on eGIS and Urban Development, who directly oversees LASBCA, confirmed that the agency was not involved.
“It is unfortunate and rather troubling that such a serious claim would be made without a proper check of the facts,” Dr. Babatunde said. “LASBCA was not involved in any such demolition, and we are committed to transparency in all our operations.”
The state government emphasized its commitment to the rule of law and the safety of all Lagosians, warning against any acts of illegality or public misinformation.
“We operate within the confines of the law and expect all residents, regardless of status, to do the same. Anyone found culpable of unlawful actions will be dealt with accordingly,” Omotoso stressed.
To ensure clarity and accountability, the Lagos State Government has instructed a thorough investigation into the matter.
“The Permanent Secretary of the Office of Urban Development, Arc. Gbolahan Owodunni Oki, FNIA, has been directed to initiate a comprehensive inquiry through LASBCA. We want to determine the facts behind this incident and take appropriate steps where necessary,” the statement read.
While assuring the public of its ongoing efforts to promote order and security, the government urged Lagosians to remain calm and dismiss any unfounded claims.
“Lagos welcomes everyone to live and thrive here,” Omotoso concluded. “Our commitment to safety, fairness, and justice remains unwavering. We will not be distracted by baseless accusations intended to discredit the work we’re doing.”
