MultiChoice slashes DStv decoder price by 50% amid subscribers decline

MultiChoice Nigeria has announced a 50 per cent price reduction for its DStv decoder, cutting the cost from ₦20,000 to ₦10,000.

The move comes as part of a strategic effort to address a sharp decline in subscriptions and attract customers back to the platform.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the company explained that the discount is a key component of its new “We Got You” campaign, designed to increase subscriber numbers and alleviate financial pressure on households.

“We want to ensure our customers feel appreciated and have access to the best entertainment every day,” said MultiChoice Nigeria CEO John Ugbe. “The ‘We Got You’ campaign is about making premium content more accessible and showing that DStv offers something for everyone, not just football fans.”

Ugbe emphasized that the platform is repositioning itself to highlight its diverse content offerings, including drama, movies, kids’ programming, and news, encouraging viewers to explore beyond sports.

The company also introduced a limited-time promotional offer: from June 16 to July 31, 2025, subscribers who pay in full for their current package will receive a free upgrade to the next tier. MultiChoice stated that these adjustments are a direct response to Nigeria’s challenging economic conditions.

The decision follows a significant loss of 1.4 million subscribers between March 2023 and March 2025, attributed to the country’s economic downturn and repeated price increases. Over the past year alone, MultiChoice implemented three separate price hikes for its DStv and GOtv packages—in April 2023, November 2023, and April 2024—with the latest increase taking effect on May 1.
