NDLEA intercepts cocaine hidden in clothes hangers

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has intercepted a consignment of cocaine ingeniously concealed in clothes hangers and stitched into garments found in a traveller’s luggage.

The discovery was made during a routine search at an undisclosed airport, as confirmed in a statement by the agency’s spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, on Sunday via his official X (formerly Twitter) handle.

“Who would have imagined that cocaine could be hidden inside clothes hangers or sewn into the fabric of dresses packed for travel?” Babafemi wrote. “But that’s the level of desperation drug cartels have now reached. Our operatives made this latest seizure during one of their regular checks.”

A video accompanying the post showed NDLEA officials uncovering the cleverly disguised packages of cocaine, underscoring the increasing ingenuity employed by traffickers in an attempt to evade detection.

Though details regarding the identities of the suspects or the destination of the consignment were not immediately disclosed, Babafemi emphasized the agency’s continued vigilance.

“The NDLEA remains several steps ahead of drug syndicates and will not relent in exposing new trafficking methods,” he added.

The agency has in recent times recorded several interceptions of illicit drugs camouflaged in food items, household materials, and personal belongings, with the latest incident reinforcing concerns about the evolving tactics of drug smugglers.
