Aliko Dangote, Africa’s foremost industrialist, will officially step down as Chairman of Dangote Sugar Refinery Plc on June 16, 2025, marking the end of two decades of leadership at the helm of one of Nigeria’s largest sugar producers.

In a statement issued by the company’s secretary, Temitope Hassan, the retirement aligns with the company’s succession planning and adherence to principles of good corporate governance.

“Alhaji Aliko Dangote (GCON) will be retiring as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Dangote Sugar Refinery Plc, effective June 16, 2025,” the statement read. “This decision reflects our commitment to long-term planning and strong corporate governance.”

Dangote has been instrumental in transforming the company into a dominant player in Nigeria’s sugar industry since assuming the role in 2005. Under his leadership, the company expanded its operations, launched Backward Integration Projects in Adamawa, Taraba, and Nasarawa States, and worked toward reducing Nigeria’s reliance on sugar imports.

The Board of Directors has announced that Arnold Ekpe, an Independent Non-Executive Director and former Group CEO of Ecobank, will take over as chairman.

“Following a thorough selection process, the Board is pleased to appoint Mr. Arnold Ekpe as the new Chairman of the Company, effective June 16, 2025,” the statement said.

Ekpe brings a wealth of experience in leadership and governance, with an impressive career in the banking and corporate sectors.

“We warmly welcome Mr. Ekpe to his new role and look forward to a new chapter under his guidance,” the statement added. “We also extend our profound gratitude to Alhaji Dangote for his exemplary service, visionary leadership, and steadfast dedication to excellence over the years.”

Dangote’s departure signifies a significant transition for the company as it continues its mission to drive self-sufficiency in sugar production and contribute to Nigeria’s economic growth.
