The race to the 2026 FIFA World Cup is heating up as nations across the globe secure their spots in what promises to be the largest and most inclusive edition of football’s premier competition.

For the first time in history, the World Cup will feature 48 teams, expanding from the traditional 32-team format. Set to be hosted jointly by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, the tournament marks a return to North American soil for the first time since the United States last hosted it in 1994.

As hosts, all three nations have received automatic qualification, bypassing the gruelling qualification process and setting the stage for a diverse showcase across the continent.

Japan became the first nation to officially qualify for the tournament on March 20, defeating Bahrain in Asian Football Confederation qualifying to cement their place among the top two in their group.

In a wave of breakthroughs from the AFC region, Iran also booked their place after a tense 2–2 draw with Uzbekistan, who made history by qualifying for their first-ever World Cup. Jordan followed suit, earning their debut appearance at the global finals. Meanwhile, South Korea continued their long-standing World Cup tradition with a 2–0 victory over Iraq in June.

From the Oceania region, New Zealand extended their regional dominance by defeating New Caledonia in March 2025 to claim their place as champions and secure qualification.

Reigning World Cup champions Argentina confirmed their spot in the 2026 tournament before playing their final qualifying match. A goalless draw between Uruguay and Bolivia ensured Argentina’s progression, paving the way for what may be Lionel Messi’s final appearance on the world stage.

Brazil, the only country to have qualified for every World Cup since the tournament began in 1930, maintained their perfect record with a decisive victory over Paraguay on June 10. Ecuador joined them shortly after with a successful qualification campaign.

Australia also secured their place, extending their World Cup appearance streak to six consecutive tournaments through strong performances in AFC qualifying.
