A devastating flood struck parts of Oyo State on Saturday, wreaking havoc on homes and farmlands in several communities, with residents suffering significant losses.

According to The PUNCH the communities of Ilu-Aje and Imini, located in Afijio Local Government Area, were among the worst affected.

Many victims have reportedly sought refuge in neighboring towns to escape the flooding.

Àkeem Olatunbosun, one of the flood victims, expressed the community’s distress: “The flood caught us completely off guard. We never expected it to happen.

The damage is overwhelming — farmlands and personal belongings worth millions have been lost. We are struggling to comprehend the extent of the destruction.”

Calls for urgent government intervention have been made by the displaced residents, urging state authorities to provide immediate relief to mitigate the impact of the disaster on their livelihoods.

In a statement released on Sunday, the Chairman of the Oyo State Road Maintenance Agency, Busoye Ogunlade, extended heartfelt sympathies to the affected families. “My heart goes out to everyone impacted by this devastating flood. I pray that the love and support of family and friends bring comfort during this challenging period,” he said.

Ogunlade also assured that the agency was committed to expediting efforts to assist the victims and prevent similar future occurrences. “We are actively working on measures to provide necessary support and to forestall further disasters. May those affected find strength and resilience,” he added.
