The Delta State Government has rescheduled the 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination for public and private secondary schools across the state, citing the upcoming Eid-ul-Adha and Democracy Day holidays.
Originally slated for June 9 to June 13, the examination will now hold from Monday, June 16 to Friday, June 20, according to a statement issued on Tuesday by Mr. Daniel Akiri, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, on behalf of the Commissioner for Secondary Education, Mrs. Rose Ezewu.
Mr. Akiri explained that the change became necessary due to the Federal Government’s declaration of public holidays on June 6 and June 9 to mark Eid-ul-Adha, and the Democracy Day celebration on June 12.
“We had to take this decision in order to accommodate the national holidays and ensure that the examination runs smoothly without disruption,” Akiri stated. “We understand the inconvenience this may cause schools, students, and parents, and we sincerely regret the sudden change.”
The BECE is a critical examination taken by students in Junior Secondary School 3 (JSS3) to determine their eligibility to move on to Senior Secondary School (SSS1) or pursue technical and vocational education.
While the National Examinations Council (NECO) oversees the exam at the federal level, individual State Ministries of Education are responsible for organizing the examination within their respective states. The assessment typically covers core subjects such as English Language, Mathematics, and Basic Science, and serves as a key transition in Nigeria’s 9-3-4 education system.
