The Federal Government has initiated a massive search operation for seven inmates who fled the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Ilesa, Osun State, following a security breach caused by torrential rainfall in the early hours of Tuesday.
The spokesperson for the Nigeria Correctional Service, Abubakar Umar, confirmed the incident in a statement, explaining, “The force majeure, which occurred about 0200hours on Tuesday, led to the escape of seven inmates.”
The Comptroller General of Corrections, Sylvester Nwakuche, has ordered an immediate investigation into the circumstances surrounding the prison break. The NCoS is collaborating with other security agencies and local community leaders to track down and recapture the fugitives.
“The service is working closely with sister security agencies as well as community leaders to recapture the escapees and bring them back to custody,” Umar stated.
He further appealed to the public for assistance, adding, “However, the service solicits the cooperation and support of the public in providing information that may lead to the recapture of the fleeing inmates.”
