71 arrested as India intensifies crackdown on dissent after Pakistan setback

The Modi-led Indian government has ramped up its clampdown on dissent, with a particular focus on Muslim communities following a setback in its confrontation with Pakistan on May 10.

Reports from Kashmir Media Service indicate that authorities in Assam have intensified arrests under the pretext of curbing “anti-national” activities.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed the arrest of three more individuals, one each from the Kokrajhar, Goalpara, and South Salmara-Mankachar districts, bringing the total number of detainees to 71.

In a statement posted on X, Sarma announced, “71 Anti-Nationals are now behind bars! Assam police are strictly monitoring the digital space.”

Among those targeted is opposition AIUDF legislator Aminul Islam, who was arrested on sedition charges after he allegedly “defended” Pakistan.

Although Islam was granted bail, he was immediately re-detained under the stringent National Security Act (NSA).

Earlier on May 2, Sarma had issued a stern warning, vowing harsh action against individuals chanting ‘Pakistan zindabad’ in response to the Pahalgam false flag incident that occurred last month.
