The Lagos State chapter of the Labour Party has expressed strong confidence in winning the upcoming July 12 local government elections if conducted fairly.
This declaration came from Mr. Olusupo Ajayi, the party’s Deputy Chairman in Lagos State, during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Sunday.
The party’s optimism follows the successful emergence of 26 chairmanship candidates from the Julius Abure-led faction during peaceful delegate-based primaries held across local councils on Friday.
These candidates will contest in the elections scheduled by the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission across all 57 Local Government Areas and Local Council Development Areas.
Ajayi pointed to the party’s impressive performance in the 2023 presidential election as evidence of their potential. “Recall that we had the highest number of votes in Lagos during the 2023 presidential election,” he said, emphasizing that Lagos residents still believe in the party’s vision for grassroots development.
“This is a grassroots election, and we aim to bring positive change, even as we face the challenge of running against the ruling party,” Ajayi stated, outlining plans for rigorous campaigning. He pledged that the party would mobilize voters legally and run impactful campaigns across local communities.
The deputy chairman framed the party’s participation as part of a broader mission to restore public confidence in politics. “Our participation is part of our effort to return governance to the grassroots and restore people’s confidence in politics,” he explained, promising community-based governance if elected.
Ajayi called on LASIEC Chairperson Justice Bola Okikiolu-Ighile to ensure electoral integrity, saying: “In the end, we will all return to dust. What we leave behind is goodwill for our children and future generations. I hope she maintains her integrity so her legacy and goodwill can endure for generations to come.”
