The Edo State Police Command has arrested the deposed Chief Priest of Okhoromi, Kelvin Igbinovia, alongside four alleged accomplices, in connection with illegal possession of firearms and a suspected human skull.

According to a statement released on Saturday by the command’s Public Relations Officer, Moses Yamu, the arrest was made during a coordinated sting operation by the Intelligence Unit, Rapid Response Squad, and the Anti-Kidnapping Squad on May 17, 2025.

“The recently dethroned Ohen of Okhoromi, Ovbokhan Kelvin Igbinovia, aged 43, was arrested along with Osarodion Omoregie, 41; Charles Otasowei, 55; Edwin Igbinovia, 45; and Osagie Igbinovia, 44,” the statement revealed.

Recovered items from Igbinovia’s residence included two AK-47 rifles, two locally made single-barrel shotguns, three empty AK-47 magazines, an OFM magazine, 11 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition, and a suspected human skull.

The police spokesperson confirmed that further investigations are ongoing to track additional weapons and apprehend fleeing members of the group.

“The Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Agbonika, assures residents that the command remains resolute in its commitment to rid Edo State of all forms of crime,” Yamu said.

Meanwhile, in a related development, the Secretary of the Benin Traditional Council, Frank Irabor, has denied any involvement in property demolitions allegedly carried out by the former Ohen.

Speaking in a statement on Friday, Irabor refuted claims made during a community protest which accused him of aiding Igbinovia and receiving land in exchange for his support.

“The allegation that I supported the former Ohen of Okhoromi in demolishing property and received land as compensation is completely false,” Irabor said. “I did not visit the community as claimed, and I challenge Victor Edosomwan, who led the protest, to present evidence within seven days or retract the accusation.”

Irabor urged relevant authorities to investigate the claims and take necessary action against those spreading misinformation, asserting that he remains committed to protecting his integrity.

“I am confident that a thorough investigation will clear my name and expose the truth,” he added.
