At least 15 farmers were reportedly killed and three others injured when armed bandits attacked Waje village in the Danko/Wasagu Local Government Area of Kebbi State on Saturday evening.
According to The PUNCH, witnesses said the assailants, riding motorcycles and heavily armed, stormed the farming community around nightfall and opened fire on unsuspecting farmers who were rounding off work on their farms.
A resident of the village, Malam Abdullahi, described the terrifying scene: “They came in large numbers on motorcycles with sophisticated weapons. As the farmers were about to leave the fields, the bandits invaded and started shooting randomly. It was horrifying.”
While residents put the death toll at 15, the Kebbi State Commissioner of Police, Nafiu Abubakar, confirmed a slightly lower figure. “Yes, we are aware of the attack in Waje village. According to our report, ten people lost their lives, and three others are receiving treatment for injuries sustained during the attack,” he said.
In a swift response, the state government sent a delegation led by the Deputy Governor, Umar Abubakar Tafida, to commiserate with the affected community. He also announced a financial donation of N24 million on behalf of the government to support the victims and their families.
Tafida said, “We are here on behalf of Governor Nasir Idris to express our deepest condolences. This attack is barbaric and completely unacceptable. The state government strongly condemns this act of violence, and we will continue to work with security agencies to bring the perpetrators to justice.”
The incident adds to the growing list of deadly attacks linked to bandits in northwestern Nigeria, heightening concerns over rural security and food production in the region.
