The Abia Concerned Citizens has accused the Julius Abure-led faction of the Labour Party of acting as a destabilizing force for opposition parties at the behest of the ruling All Progressives Congress.
The group described Abure as an “APC mole” working to weaken opposition unity.
ACC Director General Rose Ugoh made the allegations in Abuja, pointing to a recent statement by the factional National Secretary, Alhaji Umar Ibrahim, who appealed to President Bola Tinubu to intervene in the LP crisis. Ugoh argued that this move exposed Abure’s alleged allegiance to the APC.
“All genuine LP members have accepted the Supreme Court’s judgment and are working towards reconciliation, but Abure and his cohorts are destroying the party by externalizing the conflict,” Ugoh stated.
She questioned Abure’s leadership, asking, “What steps did he take when Labour Party National Assembly members defected to the APC? Is it not this same Abure who had the audacity to claim the party suspended the best performing governor in Nigeria, the best governor in the history of the South East?”
Ugoh praised Abia State Governor Alex Otti, describing him as a transformative leader.
“Governor Alex Otti has transformed Abia State, leading in key sectors such as energy, security, and education. Otti has become a model for good governance in Nigeria, transforming Abia State across the energy sector, economy, industrialization, security, education, and more. We Abians can no longer allow these APC agents to continue to denigrate the people’s governor with their unguarded statements.”
The ACC also criticized Abure’s recent suspension of prominent LP members, including Senator Ireti Kingibe, who represents the Federal Capital Territory. The group warned against further attempts to undermine opposition unity, accusing the Abure faction of prioritizing APC interests over the Labour Party’s survival.
The LP has been embroiled in internal crises, with multiple factions emerging since the 2023 elections. The ACC’s allegations add to growing concerns about external interference in opposition politics ahead of future elections.
