President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of renowned legal scholar Kharisu Sufiyanu Chukkol, a distinguished academic from Adamawa State.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu extended heartfelt condolences to the late professor’s family, students, and mentees.
Professor Chukkol, a native of Mayo Belwa in Adamawa State, passed away on Sunday evening in Abuja at the age of 79. Throughout his career, he devoted his life to the advancement of legal education at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.
President Tinubu described Professor Chukkol as a “towering figure in Nigerian legal scholarship” and acknowledged his significant contributions to the field. The president also commended the late scholar’s groundbreaking work, particularly his book The Law of Crimes in Nigeria, published in 1988, which he called “a cornerstone reference for legal practitioners and scholars.”
“Among Prof Chukkol’s ex-students are serving justices of the Supreme Court of Nigeria and various courts, senior lawyers, and the incumbent National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu,” President Tinubu noted.
Additionally, the president recognized the continued legacy of Professor Chukkol through his son, Abdulkarim Chukkol, who previously served as the acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
President Tinubu concluded his statement by praying for Allah’s mercy and eternal peace for the late professor’s soul and offering words of comfort to those mourning his loss. “I urge the family, students, and all touched by Professor Chukkol’s life to find solace in his remarkable achievements and the enduring impact of his work. May Allah grant him eternal peace,”
