The Peoples Democratic Party candidate for the September 21, 2024, governorship election in Edo State, Asue Ighodalo, has given a seven-day ultimatum to Senator Adams Oshiomhole to retract “malicious and slanderous statements” made against him on national television.

Ighodalo’s lawyers, Ayo Asala (SAN) & Associates, in a letter dated August 12, 2024, demanded that Oshiomhole: Retract the statements; Tender public and private apologies to Ighodalo; Publish the apologies in Vanguard and ThisDay Newspapers.

Failure to comply, Ighodalo threatened to institute a N20 billion suit against Oshiomhole.

The letter stated that Oshiomhole made “wild and unsubstantiated claims” about Ighodalo’s candidacy on Arise News, despite being cautioned by the moderators. Oshiomhole’s remarks were described as “derogatory” and a direct attack on Ighodalo’s person, reputation, and integrity.

The letter read in part: “On or about 7th day of August 2024, our client’s attention was drawn to widely circulated statements made by you… These statements have also been widely circulated on various social media platforms… Failure to act on our demands will lead to legal action involving a claim of N20bn for damages without any further notice.”
