A Benin High Court on Thursday ordered the remand of 56-year-old Festus Ugo at the Benin Correctional Centre over allegations of raping a 13-year-old girl.
The defendant, whose address was not provided, faces charges of rape before Justice Williams Azeigbemhin.
Prosecutor I.E. Ekibade told the court that Ugo committed the offense on May 8 at Upper Mission Road, New Benin, within the Benin Judicial Division.
“The offense contravened Sections 4(1) and Section 5(1) of the Edo State Violence Against Persons (Prohibited) Law, 2021,” Ekibade stated.
The prosecutor requested the court to remand the defendant for an initial 14-day period pending legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions.
Justice Azeigbemhin granted the prosecution’s request, ordering Ugo’s remand at the Benin Correctional Centre. The judge adjourned the case until May 29 for further proceedings.
