Former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido has ruled out joining the African Democratic Congress coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections, reaffirming his loyalty to the Peoples Democratic Party.

Speaking to journalists on Tuesday in Kano, Lamido emphasized that the PDP shaped his political career, having served as Nigeria’s Foreign Minister and a two-term governor under its platform.

While expressing openness to alliances that prioritize national stability, he dismissed the idea of abandoning his political roots.

“I believe in Nigeria, so any arrangement, be it within or outside the Peoples Democratic Party, that will secure and save Nigeria, I am ready to work with it in 2027,” Lamido told The PUNCH.

“I’m still in the PDP, even though the PDP has some problems, but I cannot renounce my history. I can’t simply walk out of my skin and crawl in flesh and blood and be conferred with a smaller skin called ADC. I cannot.”

Lamido highlighted his legacy within the PDP, stating: “The PDP honoured me with the position of minister of foreign affairs. I was also governor of Jigawa for eight years under the party. So I cannot simply renounce my history, my legacy and my heritage and say, ‘Today I got something new. I am out of the PDP.’ I will not do that.”

On State Creation Agitations
The former governor also weighed in on calls for new states, acknowledging their legitimacy but questioning their efficacy in addressing Nigeria’s systemic challenges.

“Will the creation of new states solve our problems – insecurity, poverty, hunger and division between the north and the south?” he asked.
