The Independent National Electoral Commission has announced that a total of 110 groups have officially submitted letters of intent seeking registration as political parties in preparation for the 2027 general elections.

According to The PUNCH, Chairman of INEC, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, disclosed this on Wednesday during the second quarterly consultative meeting with media executives held in Abuja.

“INEC has so far received formal expressions of interest from 110 associations requesting to be registered as political parties,” Yakubu revealed during the session. “We will continue to process these applications in line with the provisions of the Constitution and the Electoral Act.”

The meeting formed part of the commission’s ongoing engagement with media stakeholders to ensure transparency, accountability, and improved electoral processes ahead of future elections.

Yakubu also emphasized the critical role of the media in sustaining democratic governance in Nigeria. “As we approach the next general elections, we count on the media not only to report developments accurately but also to help deepen democracy through fact-based and balanced reportage,” he added.

While details of the associations seeking registration remain undisclosed, the chairman assured that the Commission would uphold due diligence in vetting each application, maintaining that “not every group that applies will necessarily meet the criteria for registration.”
