In a significant political development ahead of the 2027 general elections, the leadership of the African Democratic Congress has voluntarily stepped down to pave the way for a new wave of leadership led by former Senate President David Mark and ex-Governor of Osun State, Rauf Aregbesola.
According to The PUNCH, the announcement was made during a high-profile event held at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja, where the ADC was formally unveiled as the platform for a proposed opposition coalition aimed at unseating President Bola Tinubu in the next electoral cycle.
Speaking at the event, the founding National Chairman of the ADC, Ralph Nwosu, revealed that the decision to resign was a strategic move to reenergize the party and reposition it for national leadership.
“We took this collective step in good faith,” Nwosu said.
“We all decided to resign so that David Mark, Rauf Aregbesola, and other credible leaders can take charge and lead us toward a brighter future, including the path to Aso Villa in 2027.”
Nwosu further confirmed that David Mark has been approved as the interim National Chairman of the party, while Aregbesola will serve as the interim National Secretary.
“When you examine the track record and national commitment of these two individuals, it becomes clear that this marks a new beginning,” he added.
“They have what it takes to not just reposition the ADC, but also to reset the course of the country.”
The announcement signals a major shake-up within the opposition bloc, with expectations that the new leadership will spearhead efforts to form a broad-based coalition capable of mounting a credible challenge to the ruling All Progressives Congress.
